Cook With Oatmeal: Nutrition, Tips, & Silly Food Facts

Silly Food Fact

Did you know that almost 80% of U.S. homes have oatmeal in their pantries? It was one of the earliest kinds of cereal cultivated by man. Oats were enjoyed in China as early as 7,000 B.C., but the Greeks were the first ones to enjoy it as a cereal. The second most popular way oats are eaten are in oatmeal cookie form (yum!).

Why Our Bodies Love It

There’s a reason oatmeal is a popular breakfast. It’s super nutritious and delicious! The type of fiber found in oats is called beta-glucan. Studies have shown that this type of fiber can help improve cholesterol levels. Antioxidants don’t only come from fruits and vegetables… a compound called avenanthramides is an antioxidant found in oatmeal. There have been tons of studies showing that regular consumption of oatmeal is associated with a reduced risk of heart disease. This food is also packed with fiber to keep you fueled until lunch!

Care and Picking

Oatmeal is pretty easy to care for. It should be stored in a cool dry place and in an air-tight container. When stored properly, it has a pretty long shelf life. Many people buy it in bulk for this reason.
